Eastern Addition San Mateo Homes and Neighborhood Guide

San Mateo neighborhood guide

The Eastern Addition is one of the oldest platted areas in San Mateo. Its blocks were first laid out in the 1860s, around the time the railroad arrived, just east of the downtown business district. Because it sits so close to the core, it is often grouped with downtown, and the central neighborhood association covers the area between Fourth and Ninth Avenues from Railroad Avenue to Amphlett Boulevard.

Daily life here is centered on downtown. The B Street shops and restaurants, the San Mateo Caltrain station and Central Park, the city's first public park, are all within walking distance. To the east, Amphlett Boulevard runs alongside Highway 101, with Sunnybrae to the south and the Shoreview neighborhoods across the freeway. Highway 92 and Hayward Park station are a few minutes south.
