Hillsdale San Mateo Homes and Neighborhood Guide

San Mateo neighborhood guide

Hillsdale traces back to developer David Bohannon, who bought about 848 acres of the Beresford area in 1939 and 1940 and began building homes. The area took the Hillsdale name. Bohannon's firm then opened Hillsdale Shopping Center in December 1954 at El Camino Real and Hillsdale Boulevard, anchored by Sears and the first suburban branch of Macy's San Francisco. Homes spread out from there.

The open air center was enclosed in 1982 and has been updated since, including a newer dining and cinema wing on the former Sears site. Hillsdale Caltrain station sits next to the mall, and Bay Meadows lies just beyond. Indian Springs Park on West 39th Avenue is a local favorite for its playground and picnic tables. Beresford Park is a short drive north.
