Hayward Park San Mateo Homes and Neighborhood Guide
San Mateo neighborhood guide
Hayward Park is former estate land of Alvinza Hayward, a mining millionaire whose large Victorian house later became the Peninsula Hotel in 1908. The hotel burned in 1920. Hayward's Addition was subdivided in 1904, and the area from 10th to 16th Avenues between El Camino Real and the railroad was laid out in 1907 as Hayward Park Subdivision Number 3.
On the old hotel site, just south of Central Park, the Glazenwood Historic District holds Spanish Colonial Revival homes from the early 1920s, with stucco pillars at the entries that are remnants of the hotel gates. The city council designated it a historic district. The neighborhood also has its own Caltrain stop, Hayward Park station on Concar Drive, close to Highway 92.
