Homestead San Mateo Homes and Neighborhood Guide
San Mateo neighborhood guide
Homestead takes its name from the Homestead Estate, a 300 acre property west of El Camino Real that banker Antoine Borel bought in 1874. It was his summer home, and later the family's year round residence. Portions were sold for residential subdivisions in the 1920s, and in 1961 the center of the estate was set aside for Highway 92. The old mansion burned in 1962.
Today the neighborhood sits near where Highway 92 meets El Camino Real. The Borel Neighborhood Association describes its area as Hobart Street to El Camino Real, to Highway 92 and the Hillsborough line. Borel Middle School and Borel Park, both named for the family, are here, and the Borel Place offices sit on part of the former estate. Hayward Park station is a few minutes east.
