Lyon Hoag Burlingame Homes and Neighborhood Guide

Burlingame neighborhood guide

Lyon Hoag is one of Burlingame's earliest tracts. It was created in 1896 as part of the holdings of William H. Howard, whose family land helped shape early Burlingame. Lot sales were slow at first, then took off after the 1906 earthquake, when many San Franciscans moved down the Peninsula. Burlingame incorporated as a city two years later, in 1908.

The neighborhood lies east of the railroad tracks, close to Washington Elementary on Howard Avenue and Washington Park on Burlingame Avenue. Victoria Park offers a neighborhood playground and basketball court. The shops and restaurants of Burlingame Avenue are an easy walk away, and the historic 1894 train depot sits at the edge of downtown.

Homes and Streets

Because it was built up quickly after 1906, Lyon Hoag has many older homes from the early 1900s, including bungalows and cottages, along with homes from later decades and some newer rebuilds. Streets follow a regular grid with modest lots, sidewalks and street trees. The 1908 town ordinance protecting trees helped give the area its shaded streets.
