Downtown Burlingame Homes and Neighborhood Guide

Burlingame neighborhood guide

Downtown Burlingame is the heart of town, centered on Burlingame Avenue between El Camino Real and California Drive. The blocks are lined with boutiques, cafes, restaurants and national shops, and side streets like Park Road and Primrose Road add more places to eat and browse. Burlingame Avenue is one of the city's two main retail districts, along with Broadway about a mile to the north.

The Burlingame Farmers Market sets up on Park Road on Sundays year round, with a Thursday afternoon market in season. At the foot of Burlingame Avenue sits the Caltrain depot, which opened on October 10, 1894. It was built with local residents and the Southern Pacific Railroad, and its roof uses 18th century tiles from two Spanish missions. It became a California Historical Landmark in 1971 and now houses the Burlingame Hillsborough History Museum.

Homes and Streets

Housing downtown is a mix of apartments and condominiums above and around the shops, with older single family homes on the residential streets just beyond the commercial blocks. Burlingame grew quickly after the 1906 earthquake, when many San Franciscans moved down the Peninsula, and the surrounding streets reflect that early 1900s growth. Streets are laid out on a walkable grid shaded by the city's many street trees.
