Central Redwood City Homes and Neighborhood Guide

Redwood City neighborhood guide

Central is a flat neighborhood between Jefferson Avenue and Redwood Avenue, with El Camino Real on the east and Red Morton Park just beyond its western edge. Redwood Creek runs along the bottom and turns north toward El Camino, while Arroyo Ojo de Agua flows from Red Morton Park to Jefferson. Both run partly underground in concrete channels, and the Hetch Hetchy pipeline right of way passes beneath the neighborhood.

Shops line El Camino Real between Lincoln and Redwood avenues, including the Five Points Center, small markets, restaurants and two hotels. Hawes Park is a lighted ball field used for baseball and soccer, and Red Morton Park, the city's second largest park, sits right at the edge. The former Hawes Elementary campus closed in 2019 and is leased to other school programs.

Many homes date to around 1930, like houses on Vera Avenue built in 1929 and 1932 and a 1930 cottage on Clinton Street. Zoning allows a mix, so single family homes sit beside duplexes and small apartment buildings. The northern corner near Jefferson Avenue, Fulton Street and Vera Avenue has back alleys with garages facing them and trash pickup from the alley, a layout rare in Redwood City.
